Transmode introduces 10 Gbit/s Access Solutions for high capacity services PDF E-mail

CeBIT, Hannover, Germany and Stockholm, Sweden – 2nd March 2010 – Transmode, a leading provider of Optical Networking Solutions, today announced the availability of two new access solutions for applications such as high capacity data access networks in the financial and media industries or cloud computing.

To address the rapidly growing bandwidth demands within access networks and deeper penetration of optical fibre, Transmode has developed two new access solutions which enable network operators to deploy cost effective demarcation points in high capacity customer premise applications.

The new solutions provide operators with two demarcation options – Layer 2 Ethernet demarcation for Ethernet networks and Layer 1 optical transport demarcation for OTN transport networks. These solutions are ideally suited for operators addressing markets such as Financial Services, Media and Datacenter Interconnect, which typically require high capacity and high quality services with a managed demarcation point between the operator and the end customer.

The 10G Ethernet Access Solution provides Ethernet demarcation for either 10x Gigabit Ethernet interfaces or a single 10G Ethernet Interface. Using integrated Layer 2 Ethernet technology, the solution supports UNI and E-NNI functions for E-LINE, E-LAN and E-TREE services as defined by the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF). When deployed in the 10x Gigabit Ethernet configuration, the solution aggregates the ten client signals together onto a 10G LAN signal. The solution also supports different bandwidth profiles and classes of service on a per port or per VLAN basis. Using a standard uplink, in this case 10G LAN, the solution can be deployed as a demarcation unit within any Ethernet network.

The 10G OTN Access Solution allows the network operator to provide 10G services such as STM-64/OC-192 SDH/SONET, 10G LAN or WAN PHY Ethernet or OTU-2/OTU-2e OTN services for transport over an OTN core network. Using standard OTN transport, the access node can be deployed within a Transmode optical network or any other OTN-based transport network.

“We all know bandwidth is rapidly growing in operators’ networks and many are looking at extending existing service demarcation capabilities from 1G to 10G. These new access solutions provide operators with a very compact and feature-rich solution for high capacity access networks and we are seeing great traction within our customer base,” commented Sten Nordell, Transmode’s Chief Technology Officer. “By providing both Layer 2 Ethernet demarcation and Layer 1 OTN based optical demarcation, operators have complete flexibility on service delivery and quality assurance options.”

Both solutions are part of the Transmode TM-Series and use the compact 1U high TM-102 chassis, ensuring a small footprint and low power consumption.  This chassis also enables the access solution to house and manage any WDM filters that the deployment requires. In-band management capabilities also enable remote configuration at the customer premise. Both solutions support tunable optics for easy ordering and installation.

“As end customers move towards applications such as cloud computing and data center virtualization, high bandwidth and low latency with the right service level management tools, becomes increasingly important in the access network,” continued Sten Nordell. “These new access solutions use a broad range of standard Performance Management and OAM tools, which in conjunction with in-band management for remote access, to provide the operator with the capabilities they need to manage these high bandwidth SLAs.”

Both solutions are available today and Transmode is demonstrating them at CeBIT, Hall 12, Booth C23.
